A day out on the Thames

One of the great things about staying in London is the chance to be a tourist. Even if you’re spending time in the capital on business, it’s worth taking time out to explore. A record-breaking 31.5 million visitors came to London in 2015, proving that there’s more and more to do and see than ever before.

Whether it’s your first visit to London or you’re such a frequent visitor you feel like a local, the main tourist attractions should be on your itinerary.

Combining two of these attractions – a day out on the Thames with a river cruise and a visit to the Tower of London – makes a really good day out.

Suggested itinerary

Start your day out at Westminster Pier where you can pick up a Circular Cruise boat. As you wait for the boat to depart, you can admire the iconic Big Ben tower and the Houses of Parliament, as well as the statue of Boudica which overlooks the pier.

As you travel at a relaxed pace, the captain will give you an entertaining commentary about the various places and statues of interest along the way. From the river, you’ll get great views along the South Bank, including the Oxo Tower, Bankside, Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre and the Shard. Finally, you’ll go under the iconic Tower Bridge and disembark at St Katharine’s Dock.

From there it’s a short walk to the Tower where you could spend a lot more time than you’ll have available. Famous as the site of the execution of Henry VIII’s wives Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard, the home of the Queen’s Crown Jewels, the Beefeaters (but don’t call them that – they prefer Yeoman Warders – and the famous ravens who, legend has it, would be the cause of the fall of the Tower if they were ever to leave it.

At the end of the day, you can either get on a boat and return to Westminster Pier, or cross over the Thames on Tower Bridge and stroll back along the South Bank, perhaps calling into one of the many cafés, bars and restaurants along the way.

Money-off packages

You can always save money on a package deal when you buy your Tower of London tickets at the same time as booking your cruise on the Circular Cruise website. But until 16 April 2017, you can also get your cruise tickets for half-price as well. All you have to do is add the code TOL17 in the Offer Code box on the payment page and your total will be recalculated.

Another way of saving money on your visit to London is to stay in a serviced apartment. For the price of a modest hotel for one, you will get a whole apartment with lots of space, separate bedrooms, a fully fitted kitchen, parking and free WiFi for 2 or even 4 people.
