If you’re planning a Christmas in London with your family this year, there are more things to do than there is time to do them! So to save you time researching things to do, we’ve put together a small selection of family-friendly activities you might like to think about.
What the Dickens?!
Charles Dickens has been credited as inventing the ideal Christmas we all strive for, from the Christmas scene in his first ever novel, The Pickwick Papers, to the world famous A Christmas Carol in which Scrooge bah-humbugs his way to redemption on Christmas Eve. Every year, The Charles Dickens Museum, which is housed in the author’s old townhouse in Bloomsbury, is decorated Victorian-style Christmas and hosts a number of events celebrating his stories.
If you fancy walking off the Christmas excess, join a walking tour of Dickensian London over the festive period where you will see the locations used in his books and find out more about the true Dickensian Christmas.
You can’t be in London at Christmas time without going to see the lights. Oxford Street and Regents Street are the obvious places to start, especially if you’re Christmas shopping (or sales shopping after the 26th!), but there are also great displays at Covent Garden Market and Carnaby Street which this year has themed its lights to celebrate the ‘60s cultural revolution. And, if you don’t mind travelling to West London, try the mile-long Christmas illumination trail at Kew Gardens.
Along the river
Just because it’s winter, there’s no reason to avoid the River Thames. Take time out from the hustle and bustle of the Christmas revels and enjoy a slower pace of life (and have time to put your feet up) with a boat trip from Westminster to Greenwich in order to visit the famous Greenwich Market. Along the route, you’ll be able to take in some of the best-known landmarks of London from the comfort and warmth of the salon, whilst enjoying a nice hot cup of tea (or something stronger).
Where it’s always snowing
Finally, no family trip to north London would be complete without a visit to Hogwarts at the Warner Bros. Studio Tour. All the sets will be dressed for Christmas Harry Potter-style, and the huge model of the school will be carpeted with a blanket of snow which, whatever the weather’s doing outside, will never melt!
Our north London serviced apartments will be a perfect home away from home for your stay. Happy Christmas!
