Ideas for your October half-term staycation

Although even the dictionaries can’t agree on whether a staycation means a holiday spent in your own home or in your own home country, there’s no doubt that vacations closer to home are more in demand than ever. Domestic holidays have always been popular among Brits, even before the pandemic, but rising costs and ongoing airport delays/cancellations – which are now expected to continue until after the October half-term – are seeing more and more of us exploring what our own country has to offer. So, here are our top ideas for your October half-term staycation:

Where to stay

If you’re looking to book a family holiday in the UK this half-term, London and the surrounding areas offer plenty of attractions and things to do and see. The capital can be seen as prohibitively expensive when it comes to family breaks, especially if you need two or more bedrooms or you want to be close to all the sights. But it is possible to find a moderately priced getaway this half-term within easy reach of London.

Booking the family into one of our affordable serviced apartments in Finchley, Watford or Elstree will not only give you two or three bedrooms for the price of one mid-range hotel room, but it will also give you all so much more space to spread out. You’ll have the peace of mind of knowing the kids are safe and secure in the same apartment, and the fully fitted kitchens give you the option to dine in when you choose – saving money on lunches and dinners out.

Our serviced apartments also come with their own dedicated parking spaces and are just a short train ride away from the city centre, making them the perfect base to explore the capital and surrounding areas. So now we’ve sorted your accommodation, let’s think about your itinerary…

What to do

With the capital within such easy reach, how about taking in all the sights on a hop-on hop-off bus tour? Tickets give you unlimited travel over 24 or 48 hours, allowing you to see a multitude of iconic landmarks such as the Tower of London, Buckingham Palace and St Paul’s Cathedral, whether you just want to snap a photo on the drive past or get off and take a closer look.

There are a whole host of immersive experiences in London to keep the kids entertained this half-term – from the interactive fairy tale Shrek’s Adventure to an outdoor sleuthing challenge inspired by the hit TV series Sherlock. There’s also the Stranger Things Experience where you can step back in time ‘80s-style, and investigate the goings on in Hawkins Lab.

Or head to the British Museum for a truly unique chance to experience the museum after dark in its Egyptian-themed sleepovers. Alternatively, take a trip to the Red Planet at the Royal Observatory.

Perfect for a staycation in North London this half-term, Go Ape has two outdoor activity centres where you can get the kids moving, at Alexandra Palace or Trent Park. Or there are more adrenaline-fueled activities on offer at the Lee Valley White Water Centre or Lee Valley VeloPark.

Add some magic

With Halloween just around the corner, bring some spook-tacular fun to your staycation in Watford as the Warner Bros Studio Tour – The Making of Harry Potter (just a few miles away from Watford) sets the scene with its Dark Arts tour. And there’s something for all ages at Watford Palace Theatre, including author Nick Sharratt’s Halloween Drawalong, for children aged 4+, and The Bubble Show, a blend of magic, storytelling and bubble art for children aged 3-12.

London also offers enough free family-friendly activities to keep the kids entertained for the whole half-term break. And these aren’t just limited to the city’s many parks and landmarks – from museums and art galleries to art workshops and storytelling sessions, all interests are catered to.

If all these ideas for your October half-term staycation have inspired you, get in touch to check availability for one of our two or three bedroomed luxury serviced holiday apartments this October half-term.
