When you’re travelling away on business, it’s so easy to allow your exercise regime to slip. The unfamiliar surroundings, travelling times, preparation for meetings and the break in routine push all thoughts of a trip to the gym out of your mind.
But if you’re away for more than a couple of days, you will end up missing valuable time exercising – and this, coupled with the likelihood that you’ll be eating out more and therefore eating less healthily (let’s face it, it’s really difficult to order salad when there are chips on the menu!), means you’re more likely to end up less fit than you were when you started.
That’s why we’ve put together some suggestions to keep fit whilst travelling on business.
Walking is one of the best forms of exercise you can do. Just 30 minutes of walking a day, every day, will give you a whole host of health benefits, including a reduced risk of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, cancer and even Alzheimer’s. It will also help you with weight and blood pressure issues and keeps your bones and muscles healthy.
With such a small investment for such a huge benefit, there’s no excuse for not going out for a half-hour walk when you get back to your apartment – it’s a great way to explore the area too.
Check out the NHS website for a series of 10-minute workouts which you can do in the apartment (although if you are above another flat, please respect your neighbours and don’t disturb them by doing star jumps!). These exercises will help you tone and stretch different areas of your body, and they’ll also help you improve your strength and general health and well-being.
Hire a bike
If you’re going into Central London, don’t take the tube all the way, get off a few stops early and pick up one of Transport for London’s hire bikes. Download the app, or check out TFL’s handy online map, which not only shows you where to pick up and drop your bike, it also tells you how many bikes are available at each docking station.
